The return of the Fifester? AZ could have another round with Gov. Symington

As Terry Goddard, the term-limited Attorney General, salivates yet again at the prospect of running for governor, who does he see lurking around the corner but former Gov. Fife Symington, who has previously knocked the wind out of Goddard’s sails.

Republican Symington, who was at the helm of state government from 1991 to 1997, says he’s “thinking seriously” about running for governor once more in 2010.  This news will not be music to Goddard’s Democrat ears.

Symington has recently thrown down the political gauntlet, challenging Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s proposed state sales tax increase.

“I’m really upset about what’s happening,” Symington told the daily. “We’re going to get ourselves in a lot of trouble. I don’t think we’re pursuing the right ways to get ourselves out of trouble. “We could be doing so much better. We could be laying the framework for a brighter future. You don’t do that by raising taxes.”

Symington appears quite direct in his political plans, saying he‘s “very interested” in running for governor next year. Brewer, on the other hand has not indicated whether she plans to seek a full, four-year term in the 2010 election, although she has conceded she is “leaning” toward doing so.

Samuel Pearson “Terry” Goddard, III, is the son of former one-term Arizona governor Sam Goddard, who squeaked into office in 1964 by a 6% margin of victory.

Like his father, who was twice defeated by Republican Jack Williams,  Terry has experience running for governor.
